That Monstrous Jelly

One fine day some time back, I was trying to remove my stripping buffer by throwing it down the sink inside the fume cupboard. Never did I expect that I would be greeted by a choking sink filled with who-knows-what transparent liquid. Horrified by this discovery, I asked around what to do. Luckily Felicia came to the rescue and called the maintenance office for help. What could have happened to this small, puny sink that we normally use to discard smelly chemicals? Mainly stripping buffer.

A few days later, Mr Soh came and helped us fixed this dirty smelly (I think) sink filled with duno what. Guess what, the answer to my previous question is revealed. The cup of the sink was choked with a gigantic piece of agar-like thing (which we all presumed is agarose). Felicia was furious at this finding and wanted to find out who the culprit is. As usual, noone admitted.

Noone has casted any RNA gels (usually done in the fume cupboard) in the past two weeks, so it is unlikely its been thrown there by the people doing northern blot and its likely the gel contained ethidium bromide *gasps* poor Mr Soh.

Don't tell me its the ghost who left the bsc hood open overnight again?? I sure hope its not some sabotage by people from other labs. What have we done to deserve this kind of treatment?

Hopefully this is the last of a string of strange happenings in the lab...

first snow...

Hi everyone,

haha.... It's been kindda exciting starting a "new life" again.... starting everything (almost) from scratch. Had a cold start initially (imagine what army did to my brains...) but I've kindda got used to the life here. It's really cold here now. Temperatures dropping to sub zero and I saw snow falling from the sky for the first time in my life! haah... (paiseh, feel so sua koo) Really bbeeeaaauutttifuulll...

How are you guys doing? Well, at least Harwin's got a lab! I haven't got one yet... I can only do it for money or free since I'm taking maximum credit this semester! :( Anyway, here's a pic to let you know we are doing aye-okay! haha.... Take care and God bless.

Ghost in the Lab

This morning, Felicia came to me and asked if I left the tissue culture hood open. I felt it was pretty strange as I was the earliest person to reach (she's second) but I didn't go into that room at all. I went to see, true enough, it was open.

We went around asking people who left it on overnight. Xiaoxing was the last to leave the lab yesterday night. When she saw the hood the last time yesterday, it was 9+pm and it was closed and UV-ed. There was noone else in the lab by that time.

Who could the mysterious 'person' be? Apparently the labs along our corridor have all switched off their lights by the time I left yesterday (about 9pm).

Strange things happening during the 7th month?

We got so paranoid that when we saw a packet of beehoon left on the table which noone claimed to be theirs and we almost opened it up to see wats inside. Suspicious article? Luckily Selina claimed the packet a while later, if not it might end up in the bin. Oopz. Hee... enough for the day :D

I hate Student Outreach :(

I Don't Ever Want To Do Student Outreach AGAIN!

I hate teaching kids especially those from the proclaimed better schools, don't need to name them I guess.

I wonder how the teachers could stand those arrogant and self centered brats who enjoy bullying people who are seen as being the 'weaker' ones. Who's to define who's weak or who's not?

This boy who claimed he's did an attachment with GIS for 7mths and noone ever complained about how he handled his pipette tips dared to talk back at me when I tried to correct him. How arrogant. He's in the wrong. Guess wat, he's the worst pipette handler (despite his 7mths experience *hiaks*) Holding micropipettes with parkinson's hands..how enlightening..so thats wat GIS taught him? I tried not to laugh at him *hahaha* a bit mean but thats ME!

I just hope next year Dr. Liu dun put me on this stupid thingy again! Let BH run the whole class he will be the happiest person on earth. I wouldn't care..

So glad its only three days if not I will sure end up with one week of MC.

Student Outreach 2006

Finally, the hectic student outreach was over.. According to the veterans (Felicia and Yamada), this yr's students quality "not so good". Think Felicia and Ronghua got it worse. I'm blessed with a group of cooperative and responsible students. So kuai.. (i like Meridian JC kids!) But a bit less interesting? =P

Just wanna share some of the "classic" comments or "urban myths" (HEADLINES: sch teachers have been spreading malicious rumours about labwork to kill aspiring young scientists!!) that we had heard from this outreach.

"Vortexer will break your fingers! My teacher say one!" (Hmm i wonder how come all of us still can count ten with ours..)

"My teacher says must use pipette with both hands!" (Well, think then Dr Liu should just hire Mr Octopus to handle the multi-tasking of doing lab work)

"I mixed the cells thoroughly already. They are still in clumps cos they are fusing together!!! (??? No comments)

"Oh yah! Yes! Yes! Yes! I saw the CPE already!"
"Really, come let me have a look at what u are looking at"
.............
"Er..you haven focus on the cells yet"

Monday Blues

Always hard to wake up to a Monday, especially hard when u have World Cup, doubly hard when it has to be a cool rainy Monday morning.. Grrr...Starting the day slow..hmm can't help but to notice that the lab isn't quite buzzing with activities either. Perhaps ppl are working on their slides for Progress Report? (did i mention progress report makes monday "triply hard" to bear? ha) can't wait for the day to be over... boring, sleepy monday.

Maybe we should really pop by the new PI's office and invite, rather accept his invitation for tea. Except i know nuts (and have near zero interest) about mass spectro. haha Hmm why doesn't our boss go for tea?!

LDX Sports Day

Hmm, all i can say is that Life has been really good while our boss is away. Not that we stopped working.. just that we worked less hard, felt more at ease to play during our free time and stop pretending to work hard when we had actually finished (like crowding around lab benches to chit chat, fill tips, make more buffers than we already have..) Hmm life is good when we dun have to pretend. Ha So yesterday we sort of have an impromptu LDX Sports Day during tea time. Somehow, everyone seems very free...Hmmmz..

Ha anyway, true to the "nerdy, sedentary" image people have of researchers, Hui and her neighbour aka the self professed "The Charming One" went ahead to play pool. (Hey pool also a sport k, walk around the table so many times also tiring hor..) while the more sporty ones like Chen Guang, MY, XiaoHan and Selina (Gasps... even Selina was there) was engaged with their table tennis tournament of sort. Of cos not we didnt forget to include our cheerleading team which comprised of Siti, Benson, Ronghua (See, i told you! almost the whole lab was there!)

Ha wish we have more good times like these.. Albeit, good things never last long in life... Boss coming back and as i typed this, i mourned for the last hours of freedom, happiness and laughter during his absence.. =P

The K-Box Saga

Its been a few days since our ktv trip, haven't got the time to post anything but this event is so important, that I have to do it days after, even though its past.

On that day, 3 of us Felicia, Hui hui and myself took a half day off to go shopping. Managed to get felicia to spend some bucks before her big day hee...and then we went for a super short dinner at Mc Donalds @ PS (when xiao xing, selina, benson and huihui's friend joined in), and headed towards Paradiz Centre..

When we were there, we were greeted with a bad surprise that we could only sing until 10.30pm..the person offered to extend it till 11pm for us but we felt so cheated. $21+++ for only 3 hours? Thats ridiculous, not even if its extended to 11pm. We were all under the impression that we could sing till 3 a.m., not just 3 hours. And so we left.

We didn't know numbers of other ktvs and engaged Jong's help (really feel bad coz he's real busy preparing for the wedding). Finally we managed to find a spare room at Partyworld Cuppage..so the 3 of us, Selina, Xiao xing and me walked real fast in order to get there asap...leavin benson with the other two girls hee.

Little did we expect there would be a change of plans and we got a call from Huihui as we crossed the road to reach Meridien..that we're going to head down to chinatown instead..the room at cuppage is gone! After walking so fast to where we were, we had to walk back the same speed as when we came. And we finally regrouped and just nice, saw bus 124 which took us to Chinatown (luckily its the right direction).

All was well and we finally managed to settle down in the ktv, to catch some breath. Took some videos of Benson at his first song..hehehe..you shd know why we did that and we managed to sing for 4 hours, with two plates of fruits and some tidbits..in total..each of us paid only 22 dollars for 4 hrs..thats way cheaper than K-box that crappy place.

As for the group photo, it will be uploaded later..when I have the time hehehehe..

Hehehe finally managed to upload the cookie box photos..compliments from Wen Xu, thanks for all the japanese cookies and chocolates!! :)

The Day after Wednesday...

The 2nd day after Nemo swim back to the lab. Wednesday, He will be going to NTU again and surely after a week in US, he has to check on those who are loosely governed.

Back at LDX, Benson (I) once again kept himself busy for the entire day. Remarkably when Nemo isn;t around. Dun ask me why, I also sian :(

Pressured by the MAU lady boss, I need to cough out results for next week's meeting...

Most took their deserving break every Wed - minimal experiments, plenty of chats and gossips and a tea break. Something I'm accustomed to except today!

Time passed by, meaningfully for me until I viewed my IF results. Perhaps I should have been in the work station for the day! Repeat Exp!

Well, at least I need not work OT and Dr Nasir is offering me a ride home and I'm on leave tomorrow!!! COS Its Champions league semi final - Barcelona Vs AC Milan.

Hahaha, to the rest, work hard tomorrow!!!
